Hey you guys!! How is everyone holding up? We are at what, day 21 of Quarantine! Which, is still crazy to think that this is our reality! Every day is either, Monday or Friday. At least that is how I feel. Most days we stay pretty busy, but some days just down right suck a little.
What I do know is, that we all are washing our hands, food, and anything else we can physically scrub down at greater frequency, than normal. I don’t know about you, but my hands are dry, red and cracked. I’m a stay-at-home mom, and I find that I wash my hands a lot, normally. But, right now, I feel like I’m washing my hands like I have a newborn baby. Which brings me to Sugar Scrub!
I’ve made my own for a while now. It is super easy to make. You only need 2 ingredients. I add more to mine, but that is optional.
What you need is:
- Granulated Sugar
- Coconut oil (from the grocery store)
*Options: Essential oil, Vitamin E oil (I get mine from Trader Joes), Jojoba oil (also from Trader Joe’s) and for fun, colored sugar sprinkles!
I just recently made Porch Presents!! Since we have to enforce social distancing, I thought it would be a fun little thing for the girls and I to do together, and give a little cheer to those we love, but can’t hug. When I make mine, I made a huge batch and give some away. So I don’t have exact measurements to give you. This is me winging it.
Step 1:
Find a jar that you are going to keep it in. And fill it half with sugar.
Step 2:
This is were you are going to eyeball it. Look at the amount of sugar you have in your jar, now scoop about 1/2 that amount of coconut oil, and put it in a microwavable bowl. (So if you had 1 cup of sugar, you put in 1/2 cup of coconut oil) Now you are going to melt the coconut oil. Just enough for it to be part liquid, part solid. No worries if it’s all melted. It melts quick, so start with 10 seconds.
Step 3:
Pour your sugar into the bowl of coconut oil, and mix. I use a spatula and mush it all around until it’s all incorporated. (If you do not have Jojoba oil, Vitamin E or Essential Oil, skip to step 5) If it is too dry, add more oil. Too wet, add more sugar. This comes down to preference. I make mine where if it is like a soft cookie dough, not crumbly.
Step 4:
If you have Jojoba oil, Vitamin E, you will add it now. Depending on how much sugar/coconut oil you’re working with, depends on how much you use. You only need a little. So if I was going off 1 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of coconut oil, I would use about 1 Tbsp of one or both oils. And the amount of essential oil you use, also depends on the quality of essential oil you have or the throw of sent you want. Assuming you’re making a small batch. Start with 5-10 drops, stir and smell.
Step 5:
Once everything is all mixed, that’s it! Put it back in your jar to store it! *Unless you want to add some color, which I only do if I am giving it away. I add colored sugared sprinkles based on the scent or holiday. (like orange sprinkles if it is orange scented or Halloween)
Step 6:
Now it is time to use it!! When you use this, it goes on dry hands!! Water will melt the sugar crystals pretty quick and you wont get the scrubbing benefit. Just grab a small scoop, about a teaspoon, and start scrubbing. Spend a little time and then rinse. I use essential oils, so I always take a nice deep breath into the palm of my hands and even rub it on my lips. Makes a great lip scrub and taste yummy! Then rinse off! It you want to add a little lotion after to seal it all in, great. But you wont really need it.
Notes:
Again, this isn’t a perfect science or recipe, just wing it. Some times it might be more dry, or more oily. It’s all good, and all your preference. I don’t make a super oily, runny sugar scrub. I find mine to be a little more dry than the ones you get from the store. But, I prefer it that way. I don’t want super oily hands, to me that would be more of a hand treatment. (like a night and I would put on gloves and let it really soak in) I use this daily, I just need a little something to help heal and moisturize my hands while schlepping off some dry, dead skin.
Alright, going to wrap it up there! I hope you guys have a wonderful weekend. Let me know if you end up making this and if you added sprinkles or anything else. I love hearing from you!!
Happy scrubbing,
~Jeanne
