It’s that time of year, actually, it’s been that time of year since last year before the holidays, and I am writing this in February! Not only is it fire season here in California (it’s usually not this time of year either), but the crud is going around, still, hitting entire families like wildfires, it has been terrible.
My family got hit hard right after Christmas and through the New Year. I had 2 days that I didn’t feel good. My husband, on the other hand, got hit hard!! Cough, body aches, and fever off and on for 8 days. It then took him 2 – 3 weeks after that to move beyond the cough, exhaustion, and fatigue.
Last year was a bit heavy for me, I had a lot going on. However, I did prioritize time for myself. Most of my downtime was spent reading and doing my best to listen and take care of my body. A main focus of mine has been to get a deeper understanding of herbs, and spices, and simplify my and my family’s food. I have really focused on anti-inflammatory, pain relief, and immunity. One of the combinations of herbs and spices I landed on was my Immunity Bomb. Silly me, I should have also been giving it to my husband, but yeah, I missed that step (sorry babes).
Here are a few health benefits of the Immunity Health Bomb, if you’re interested.
Manuka Honey: powerful antibacterial & antiviral properties, boosts immunity, aids in wound healing, soothes sore throat and cough, improves gut health, and more. For maximum benefits, choose raw, high-grade Manuka honey. Look for UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) or MGO rating, indicating its antibacterial strength (UMF 10+ or higher or 250+ MGO-Methylglyoxal: key antibacterial property, is ideal for medicinal use). Honey can be heated, but excessive heat can degrade its beneficial enzymes, antioxidants, and nutrients. Safe heating temperature is below 104 degrees F. I stay at about 100F. Regular honey works well also and shares the same general health properties, but Manuka is more powerful and potent than regular honey.
Turmeric: reduces inflammation, boosts antioxidant levels, supports joint health, is good for your heart, aids in digestion, and may have cancer-fighting properties. It can stain, so be mindful when using it.
Ginger: aids digestion, anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, boosts immunity, supports heart health, etc.
Cayenne: reduces inflammation, relieves pain naturally, boosts metabolism.
Black Pepper: often called the “King of Spices” it enhances nutrient absorption (piperine improves the absorption of nutrients like turmeric’s curcumin, vitamins, and minerals), aids in digestion, has powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, boosts immunity, may have cancer-fighting properties. For maximum benefit, use fresh ground black pepper.
Vanilla Extract: More than just a flavor enhancer, it may reduce inflammation and potentially ease joint pain and other inflammatory conditions. It is also a mood booster, aids in digestion, has natural antibacterial properties, regulates blood sugar, and supports skin health. Make sure you’re using pure vanilla extract and not artificial flavoring.
Ceylon Cinnamon: powerful spice packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and blood sugar-regulating benefits. Good for brain function, supports digestion, and fights infections. Ceylon is “true cinnamon” that comes from Sri Lanka, and has a milder, sweeter flavor, and lower coumarin content that is safe for daily consumption. Other cinnamon has a more intense flavor and a higher concentration of cinnamaldehyde, making it more pungent. It also has high coumarin levels, which can be harmful to the liver if consumed in large amounts regularly. In a nutshell, use Ceylon cinnamon for daily and larger use, and regular cinnamon for bold flavors, baking, and occasional use.
I take a teaspoon of this daily right now, and will for a while. It has a host of health benefits, and I enjoy the taste. You can eat it right off the spoon or add it to a mug of warm water, that is my preference. Just remember to not add it to water that is warmer than 100 degrees F if you want the full benefits of the honey.
I hope you all stay healthy, and happy and learn a little something while being here.
